MEETING HOUSE PHILADELPHIA, PA
A new Meetinghouse FOR Chestnut Hill Friends MEETING
The first new Delaware Valley Quaker meetinghouse in five decades. The building gives the Meeting the space to grow its congregation, expand its mission of social outreach, and provide emergency housing for those in need. Built on the site of a former schist quarry, the building is oriented toward a cove of rock outcroppings and a stand of mature pine trees. We collaborated with renowned artist James Turrell to incorporate a Skyspace into the meeting room ceiling. Turrell's Skyspace is a square aperture in the vaulted ceiling that opens to the sky at dawn and dusk. Gradually shifting colored light interacts with the rising or setting sun to create a contemplative focus inside the room.
